Consideration when stand up paddling

How can I reduce disturbance to birds and other wildlife?

More and more people are practicing stand up paddling. The sport can be practiced all year round and especially in shallow water zones and bank areas. In this way, people can reach areas that have not been disturbed until now.

Because SUP is almost noiseless, the potential for disturbance to animals is misjudged to be low. Waterfowl, in particular, perceive the silhouette and movements of paddlers as a threat. They can already react to a single paddler at a distance of 1000 m by fleeing. This costs energy, puts a strain on wild animals and can affect their survival and reproductive success. This endangers important habitats and in particular breeding and resting areas.

By following the rules listed here, paddlers can be considerate and reduce disruption. This reduces stress for waterfowl and other wildlife.
